can you ever give money to a homeless person?

i love to give3 leftover (or unopened, even) food or unused gift cards to homeless people and shelters, but never money, after seeing and hearing so many go strait to the smokes, drugs, or drink... is there a way to give money?

I truly dont think there is. I think that giving them the things that they need is far more beneficial to them than giving them cash. Think about it. If you were homeless and you knew that a beer, or a drug was your "escape" from the pain and everything that you feel, you would naturally take the escape. I think your doing great by offering your things to them, and that you should keep it up.
